Changes to the School prayer

School Council were keen to update our school prayer to reflect the commitment we have as a school to a Rights Respecting ethos. We collected our own ideas together first and prepared two new prayers. We took these back to every class to be considered and  ammended. We felt it was essential that everyone had a say in developing the new prayer. It will be everyone's and everyone must be happy with it. Mrs. Rees discussed the prayers with Mr. Treeby and Mr Lavis and a final version was agreed.
The new prayer was introduced to school in a special School Council Assembly.

Father God we ask you to bless our school and keep us safe.
Be with us as we live and learn and grow together.
Help us to enjoy our rights, to respect others and take our responsibilities seriously.
Amen

Rights and respecting school

This week we have been learning about rights and respecting school. We were looking article 15,my group where looking at green peace. We got given a peace of paper and what it said on the paper we had to trie and make it into a role play. After we had the little role play one group went up one by one bravely showing it, it was fun in a way. When we had finished we talked about the rights that the role play did not have.

After all of that we had to draw a picture of our role play and write down the right about it too plus about two of the characters.I really enjoyed it!

Article 15 Rights and Respecting

In year 6 this week we have been looking at human rights, pasificly article 15. That article says that children and adults have the right to join in through a wide range of clubs, football teams and well known organizations across the country, well, most of the world realy . So we've been acting out role play situations to do with games and lifelike options that might happen in the future ! Although we have had a short time to study this ,we have also drawn pictures to go with our writing about how people are breaking our rights!

Every class in the school has focused on one of the 42 articles. As some of you already know we(year 6)have looked at article 15.Miss King gave all 5 groups a different senario. After that we acted them out infront of the whole class. My groups scenario was green peace(a organisation that helps the earth)didn't like people killing whales and a man from Japan killed a whale so green peace were angry!

Putting the Art in Articles!

On  Friday October 23rd we had a special assembly for parents to present the articles we have been looking at in our classes this half term. The assembly was introduced by our School Representative on the Rights Respecting Schools project.

Koala Base, our very youngest children showed their amazing poster illustrating the basic Needs or Rights that we all have.

Year 1 clearly felt strongly about their right to their name! [article 7]

Year 2. Explained how to achieve a healthy life style and how rich countries can support poorer countries in working towards this for all children [Article 24]

Year 3 have been debating hard and enjoying their right to express their opinion. They reminded us that we can use our school council to add our voices in decisions about the running of the school.

Year 4 shared their work on article 27 explaining how everyone has a right to a good standard of living  and how families can be supported in providing this.

Year 5 Have had a good half term exploring their right to play!

And Year 6 have looked at article 15 the right to participate and join groups.

Parent's Rights!

We had a fantastic turn out for our Rights Respecting Schools Evening for Parents.
The UNICEF Rights Respecting Award  scheme  promotes the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as the basis for enhancing teaching, learning, ethos, attitudes and behaviour in schools.
All the schools in our pyramid have signed up in the hope that Blandford will become a Rights Respecting Community.
Everyone  joined in very good naturedly with a variety of activities  enabling them to become familiar with the UNCRC and the way it is being used in school.

Later we were treated to samples of Healthy Hot School Meals and samples from our very own cooking club.

'Wants and needs' in Year 2

Year 2 have been learning the difference between wants and needs. In our circle time we imagined we were starting a new life on a desert island and all chose something we would like to take wirth us. We then sorted these out and listed the ones that would be essential for us to survive; food and seeds to grow more food, water, tools to build shelters, someone else for company, favourite toy for relaxation.

We learned about the 'United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child' and found that these needs are actually seen as our rights and also the rights of all children everywhere.

Community links.

Today  two community police officers called Luke and Ryan came to speak to us in assembly. They were friendly and made us laugh. They also played the guitar and the keyboard!
Then they talked  about 'Rights and Responsibilities' in the community. We learned that the rights we expect for everyone at school; to be safe, to be comfortable, to enjoy a clean environment and to be respected also apply outside the school. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure our behaviuor outside is not antisocial. Behaviour that Luke and Ryan sometimes see includes litter dropping, graffiti, damaging things on purpose, swearing, and even rudeness to members of the community. These clearly offend people and prevent them from enjoying their rights in their own homes.
We want Blandford St Mary to be a good place to live and so we are going to think about our responsibilities as we grow into good citizens.

Assembly for parents

On Friday 11th September we held a special assembly to explain and  present our charters to the parents.

We think they were very impressed!

Class charters

Hi everyone and welcome to our Blog. We will keep you updated on activities going on in school which are leading us towards becoming a 'Rights Respecting School.'
In the first week of term every class discussed what they would like their new base to be like. Older classes looked at the 'United Nations Convention on the Rights Of The Child' and decided which rights are relevant to the classroom. Each class then created a list of rights that all children should enjoy in their class. These included the right to learn, the right to be safe, the right to feel comfortable, the right to have our say, the right to be respected. Classes then discussed the behaviour and classroom routines that would be necessary to achieve these rights for everyone. These were introduced as our responsibilities. For example, our right to learn, lies alongside the responsibility to listen and follow instructions, the responsibility not to distract others and the responsibility to try our best at all times. Once all the rights and responsibilities were agreed everyone signed the charter. All the bases then displayed their charters in different ways.
